Plan Description
This map’s focus is on Legislative Districts (“LD”) 6 and 7. For the sake of being able to submit the map via the mapping tool, all the districts have been balanced within the +/- 5% deviation. The map follows the guidelines of Prop 106 and protects several communities of interest, such as: Rural communities; • The Verde Valley to protect the watershed and forest fire prevention communities of interest; • National Monuments that are inherent and historically relevant to Arizona such as the Grand Canyon, parts of the Colorado River, Oak Creek Canyon, Petrified Forest, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon and Walnut Canyon; • A focus on not splitting cities such as Sedona and Flagstaff into two legislative districts; • Tourism communities of interest which continue to thrive;
Plan Objective
Perhaps more importantly, this map protects Native Americans and other minority groups under the Voting Rights Act. One such example is that this map raises the Native American population in LD 7 from 31.58% to over 50%, allowing LD 7 to be a minority-majority district.
